ATV is one of the two free-to-air broadcasters in Hong Kong. Its mission is to serve the interest of the local community through its distinctive and diversified programming. ATV has also impacted TV viewing in Asia and the Chinese communities worldwide.
The Company was established on May 29, 1957 in Hong Kong, it was a pay cable TV service called Rediffusion (Hong Kong) Ltd (“Rediffusion”). Rediffusion was the first ever TV station in Hong Kong, and the first Chinese TV station in the World. Rediffusion renamed to Rediffusion Television Ltd (“RTV”) and changed to free-to-air, wireless broadcasting services in 1973. In 1982, it renamed to Asia Television Ltd (“ATV”).
In Hong Kong, ATV operates a 24-hour free analogue Chinese HOME Channel around the clock, and a 22-hour English WORLD Channel - 5 hours of which are for financial information. Starting from the end of 2007, ATV rolled out digital services with one free 24 hour HD channel and three free standard definition television channels: CTI-Asia and CCTV-4 and TVS-2.
In China, ATV analogue services obtained landing right in Southern part of China, Guangdong Province since 2002.
In North America, its pay Chinese TV service (ATV HOME Channel, America) offers subscribers an eclectic range of programming in Cantonese - 24 hours a day on Echostar's DISH network and Rogers Cable Network.
Each year, ATV produces more than 1,000 hours of entertainment programming - mainly documentary, drama, variety shows and housewife & kids programmes. With innovation and originality as its trademark, ATV drama and documentary - heartily embraced by local and overseas viewers - have been distributed to broadcasters in Europe, Asia, America, Australia, and more than 30 nations and regions around the world.
Together with the two analogue channels, ATV provides the best of programming for audiences in the Greater China Area. ATV's HOME and WORLD Channels have won countless awards for their programme promotions. PROMAX International, 4As Creative Awards' Kan Fan - the ultimate recognition of creative excellence, and some 30 gold, silver bronze awards at the New York Festivals.
